Candle Care 101: How to Get the Most Out of Every Candle

Candle Care 101: How to Get the Most Out of Every Candle

You invested in a beautiful candle — now make it last. Proper candle care isn't complicated, but a few simple habits can dramatically improve your burn time, scent throw, and overall experience. Here's everything you need to know.

1. Trim Your Wick Before Every Burn

This is the single most important candle care habit. Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to ¼ inch. A long wick creates a larger, hotter flame that burns through wax too quickly, produces excess soot, and can cause the jar to overheat. A simple pair of scissors or a wick trimmer does the job perfectly.

Signs your wick is too long: flickering flame, black smoke, mushrooming at the tip, or soot on the jar.

2. Nail the First Burn

The first time you light a candle is the most important burn. Allow the wax to melt all the way to the edges of the container before extinguishing — this is called achieving a full melt pool. Skipping this step causes tunneling, where the candle burns straight down the center, wasting wax along the sides and reducing scent throw.

Depending on the size of your candle, this first burn may take 2–4 hours. Plan accordingly!

3. Don't Burn for More Than 4 Hours at a Time

Extended burns cause the wick to "mushroom" (carbon buildup at the tip), the wax to overheat, and the fragrance to dissipate faster. Four hours is the sweet spot. After that, extinguish the flame, let the wax cool completely, trim the wick, and relight when ready.

4. Keep the Wax Pool Clean

Debris in the wax — like wick trimmings or matches — can cause uneven burning and even flare-ups. Always check the wax pool before lighting and remove anything that doesn't belong.

5. Store Candles Properly

Heat, light, and humidity are a candle's enemies. Store your candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UV light can fade the color and degrade the fragrance over time. Keep lids on when not in use to protect the scent.

6. Know When to Stop

Stop burning your candle when ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom. Burning below this point can cause the jar to overheat and crack. At this stage, the candle has served its purpose — and the jar can often be cleaned out and repurposed!
